Wells for India

OCS has given considerable support to the Wells for India charity, based in Kotra, Rajasthan.  OCS’ support has provided assistance for the region, dealing with the urgent needs this community had for nutritional support, unpolluted water, water harvesting, hand pumps, latrines and health education.  Women here bear an average of 12 children and require more fruit, vegetables and protein in their diets than has been generally available.

The charity has allowed for a number of Non-Government Organisation (NGO) partners in India to provide a regular teacher to the village, in turn allowing the children to attend school more consistently. The NGO Rajasthan Bal Kalyan Samiti, or RBKS, prepared a full programme for this community, and from this, we have been in to provide the initial funding for a number of these activities.

So far, we have raised a total amount of £22,486.66, for 15 water tank collections and toilet facilities in Schools in India. The tanks store essential water supplies to cover the period of limited rainfall over the 2-3 months of monsoons, and the toilets are vital to improve overall health levels.

We are currently looking to bring safe water to 10 villages in the Dudu block, Jaipur district, covering 2300 families. The project has a special focus on involving and empowering local people, starting with access to safe drinking and irrigation water, as many are currently without either. The type of work will be: water harvesting structure: such as taankas (underground water storage tanks), anicuts (small dams), water development (such as deepening ponds for cattle to drink), roof rain-water harvesting and much more.
